Third win in three league matches for the Prosecco DOC Imoco Volleyball Panthers who violated Perugia’s PalaBarton, despite the valid resistance of the newly promoted Bartoccini MC, in the advance (due to World Club Championship in December) of the 13th day.
In the starting lineups of the match continues the turnover of coach Santarelli, who reintroduces captain Wolosz as director, the young Merit Adiwge makes her debut as opposing player, Chirichella at the center and another debut, the great return to the field of the Olympic Marina Lubian, setters Gabi and Lanier, libero De Gennaro. Coach Giovi puts on the court for Bartoccini MC Restauri hosts the diagonal Ricci-Nemeth, centers Cekulaev and Gryka, setters Ungureanu and Gardini, free Sirressi.
First set and immediately the Panthers try to lay down the law; an immediately unleashed Moki De Gennaro puts chocolates on the hands of captain Wolosz who engages all her forwards, sending Gabi, Lubian and Lanier to score for the 1-4. Baby Merit Adigwe also shines, who gets off to a rocket start, making great use of the opportunity to play from the start: first she places the ace, then the point on counterattack and a series of venomous serves that propitiate a devastating break: 1-8 and Perugia has to ask for two consecutive time outs to stop the bleeding with Prosecco DOC Imoco already far behind. Ungureanu (5 points) tries to push with grit, Gardini helps her to revitalize the hosts, but Gabi immediately proves to be on a night of grace, the Brazilian top player is “on fire” (6 points in the set with 6/7 on offense!) and hits on repeat (5-13). Adiwge continues to push without any reverential fear (5 points in the set with 80%), then there are the walls of a solid Chirichella and a Lubian perky after the forced stop (13 points in two at the end for the yellow-blue powerhouses) and Prosecco DOC Imoco continues the march (9-18). Captain Wolsoz is on a roll (78% team attack in the set!), with crisp direction she frees up all her forwards in turn, the reception works well, the defense puts on a show and Conegliano closes the set 14-25 with Khalia Lanier’s final blow (4 points in the set).
In the second set the home Black Angels try to fight back in front of a very hot PalaBarton, Poland’s Gryka stings on serve and then there is also the Umbrian wall with Cekulaev for the sudden break of the home team (6-1). Time out by coach Santarelli. The Panthers point by point get back under, again De Gennaro points the way, then Adiwge and Lanier give weight to the yellow-blue attack and halve the gap (12-9). There is battle, Nemeth keeps Perugia ahead with two broadsides (14-9), Coach Santarelli calls Haak from the bench with Nanami Seki at the dribble. The acce of a concrete Lanier (she will close with 12 points and 2 walls) ignites the Prosecco DOC Imoco, “Bella” as soon as she enters makes her power felt and the tie arrives at 15 with Lubian’s wall. Conegliano’s 6-0 break launches the Panthers to overtake and, having absorbed the shoulder of Gardini and her teammates, they start marching again with a rollercoaster until the end of the second partial, led by the class of De Gennaro and Wolosz. In an instant Gabi (inspired in attack) and teammates were back ahead (17-21), Perugia also committed a few errors and the Italian champions prevailed 17-25 (final break 10-2) with the Brazilian’s hit, flying 2-0.
The Panthers want to close fast, coach Santarelli, a native Umbrian who plays at home in Perugia, keeps the concentration of his “dream team” high, and although the hosts try in every way to lift their fortunes, the Venetian team is relentless. The protagonists are always changing and it is difficult for the opponents to find countermeasures, after Gabi (today the first MVP of her season with 13 points and 57% in attack) now it is Marina Lubian who lays down the law, in fast and in serve, then both Chirichella in the center and Lanier and Gabi on the wing continue to pass regularly and the lead increases (6-9). Perugia puts its own spin on it with lots of hitting errors (15 total) that limit a bit the ambitions of Nemeth (16 points, top scorer of the match) and companions.
Merit Adiwge (splendid debut with 12 points, a great 62% in attack, 3 aces, 1 wall) confirms her first night as a Panther as a great protagonist, the Azzurrina valuable product of the youth sector plays with personality, lets her arm go and two aces in a row also arrive for the +5 (11-16) that paves the way. Lubian hammers with the fast and the Prosecco DOC Imoco doesn’t stop anymore showing a sparkling attack orchestrated wonderfully by her captain.
In the final, space was also given to Anna Bardaro’s turn behind, for a truly convincing “team” victory (21-25 the final set with the vain chase of the Umbrians), with the whole yellow-blue team that despite the rotations continues to grow from match to match, waiting for the final insertion of another star, the Chinese Zhu who arrived a week ago and today for the first time on the bench.
After the applause at PalaBarton, tomorrow and Saturday Panthers in training in Foligno, coach Santarelli’s hometown, then transfer to the capital for the third consecutive away match scheduled for Sunday at 4:30 p.m. with Roma Volleyball opposing Prosecco DOC Imoco still undefeated this season.
