Panthers of A.Carraro Imoco Volleyball in “All Black” version in the third match of Champions League group A tonight in Poland, on the court of Developres Resovia. The reigning European champions, despite the fact that the pool’s main antagonist was in front of them, won another victory, their third in as many matches in the main European cup, which propels them lonely at the top of the standings as they await the opening of the return round on Dec. 10 at Palaverde with the Bulgarians of Plovdiv.
Coach Santarelli in front of Resovia’s 2,000-strong Resovia crowd lines up the two Poles eager to do well in their homeland, captain Asia Wolosz and setter Martyna Lukasik, who turned 25 yesterday. With them is Bella Haak as opposite, Zhu as setter, at center the golden pair Lubian-Fahr, libero the other Olympic Panther Moki De Gennaro. Resovia lined up to the applause of its audience with Wenerska-Machado, Korneluk-Centka, Jasper-Fedusio, libero Szczyglowska.
A.Carraro Imoco’s first set saw a strong start right away with Lubian’s opening serve that yielded a 0-2 lead, however, ephemeral. The Panthers tried again with Haak and Fahr (3-6). Absorbing the blow, Resovia shows its qualities, Jasper and Fedusio enter the match well and the partial is balanced. Conegliano makes some mistakes, Developres gains confidence, defends well and comes back successfully, even finding a good lead: 13-10. Set run-up, Resovia flies to +4 /16-11), red alert. Lukasik struggles in reception, but redeems himself in attack, then comes Zhu from second line for -3. A.Carraro Imoco tries to spark the comeback, but Fedusio (6 points in the set) and Korneluk keep the lead: 19-16. Gabi enters in the second line, then it’s Marina Lubian’s turn to take the lead (she will play her best game of the season with 14 points and 7 total walls): two “monster blocks” in a row for -1 (20-19). The Panthers’ tie comes at 21, but it is Lubian again who scores the wall-ace double that breaks the balance (22-23). The 23-24 is an incredible point closed by Bella Haak (7 points in the set), but an excellent Machado (ditto 7 points) equalizes. Gabi seals the 24-25, but there is still Korneluk and the battle against the tough Polish girls continues, good at making the first set endless, answering blow after blow. At the sixth attempt it takes Gabi’s wall, decisive with her energy-filled entrance in the fnale, for the 28-30 that sends the Panthers ahead.
The second set sees A.Carraro Imoco start off guarded, then look for the first stretch in the middle phase, but then having to sweat hard to bring home the partial, although the scoreboard will sign a wide score only in appearance. In fact, after a very balanced initial phase with Machado good at keeping the Poles alive, comes the rush of the Panthers who unleash the strength of Isabelle Haak (8 points in the set) and the offensive verve of the central players (7 points in two), with Fahr infallible and some flashes also of Lukasik, again deployed in the sextet. The +5 (13-18) however is illusory, Fedusio hits at bat, the rest is done by Resovia’s good wall where Korneluk ‘s excellent game continues (she will put 5 on the scoreboard at the end with 19 total points) and the hosts come within a whisker (17-18). Out comes Lukasik and in comes Gabi in the second line for a final sprint that sees her starring in the second line while Zhu also brings her class to bear with the points of tranquility after a couple of defenses by De Gennaro (17-21). It is the decisive spurt, in which Seki also participates with a couple of defenses that allow to close: again Zhu Thing decisive (3 golden points in the final), Haak closes 20-25.
The “black panthers”, who after the first two matches played in “red A.Carraro” today presented the new black uniform (the other color that characterizes the tractors of the Campodarsego house, naming sponsor in the Champions League for the Conegliano club), approach the third partial with confidence, but Resovia at home does not want to give up and proves to be a high level team, conquering the partial despite coach Santarelli this time played from the beginning the jolly-Gabi. Korneluk sounds the charge to the tune of walls and winning attacks (6 points in the set, as Machado), Fedusio and Jasper dare and are rewarded: 15-11, the match is really tight.
Wolosz and her teammates are forced to chase, the captain playing on home soil increases the pace and points the way of the comeback to her teammates, along with an always lively Lubian. When Zhu closes with a great wall the endless and exciting overtaking point at 20-21 it seems like the decisive moment to close, but the Poles are not of the opinion and push on with Fedusio and Machado, doing wonders in defense. There is also some smearing in the final that costs the Panthers dearly; Korneluk and her teammates give Conegliano’s first sorrow of the European season: 25-23 and Resovia halves the gap.
In the fourth set A.Carraro Imoco accepts the “head-to-head” only at the beginning of the partial, then the European champions definitely find their rhythm and never look back. After an “up and down” start Bella Haak and the whole attack of the Panthers take off, there are no more errors and the game gushes smoothly for a crescendo ending. On 11-13 the boost comes from two incredible points procured by as many “energetic” defenses by first Fahr and then Wolosz, 11-15. From there on Haak‘s broadsides become unstoppable (she will finish with 28 points, MVP title of the match for the Queen of the North), besides the Swedish captain Wolosz also finds solutions with an excellent Marina Lubian. Jasper and her companions after a match where they defended the impossible can no longer hold the slipstream (12-19). Isabelle Haak continues to hammer from the serve as well, the Swedish star has decided to close, the yellow-blue wall (16 total, 7 by Lubian) and defense do the rest and the victory comes with the final blow of 15-25 by Zhu that allows A.Carraro Imoco, still undefeated, to climb to the top of the Champions round after the tough trip to Polish soil.
